Tesla Recalls 475,00 cars for Increased Risk of Accidents
After discovering two safety issues that may increase the risk of accidents, Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 cars. The two defects were caused by design or design manufacturing problems and the separate recalls were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the end of December.
Defective products kill or injure thousands of Americans every year. In 2020 alone, almost 11 million people were treated in emergency departments for injuries they suffered after using consumer products. If you or a loved one was injured as a result of a defective product, contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss your legal options.
Tesla Recalls 475,00 cars for Increased Risk of Accidents
The total number of vehicles affected by the recalls is 475,318.
The first recall affects all 2017 through 2020 Tesla Model 3s. This recall is related to potential issues with a cable that leads to the rearview camera. The filing states that the cable may become damaged over time as the trunk lid is opened and closed, which can eventually prevent the camera image from displaying. According to Tesla, the cable issue can be fixed with the installation of a new cable harness and guide protector.
The second recall affects all Model S sedans from 2014 or later. This recall is related to potential issues with latches for the front trunk (frunk). The filing states that some latches were not installed properly at the factories and could cause the front hood to fly open while driving, dangerously obstructing the driver’s view of the road. According to Tesla, the latch issue can be fixed by realigning the device at a service center.
Tesla owners of these models will have these services provided free of charge.
Tesla product recalls
Tesla is no stranger to product recalls and safety concerns. In addition to this most recent recall of almost half a million vehicles, in the last year, Tesla’s autopilot system began facing increasing scrutiny as crashes built up. In 2016, Tesla was affected by a high-force battery explosion that ended in a fatal crash.
Last week, in response to a statement by the NHTSA that it was launching a formal investigation into distracted driving concerns, Tesla announced that it was going to disable a feature that allowed both drivers and front passengers to play video games on center touch screens while vehicles were moving.
Product liability law
Defective and dangerous products cause thousands of injuries every year. If you were involved in a car crash caused by a defective part, contact a product liability lawyer today; they may be able to help you recover damages for your losses and injuries.
In successful product liability cases, a product manufacturer, distributor or seller is held liable for the injuries caused by the defective or dangerous product. Product liability laws vary by state but generally require that a product meet ordinary consumer expectations that a product be free of defects or dangers. When a product fails to meet this threshold, it could end up as part of a product liability lawsuit.
