Eldridge Ave Scene of 2 DUI Crashes in Bellingham Over the Weekend
While most people take drinking and driving seriously after decades of public education campaigns, there are still far too many people who choose to get behind the wheel intoxicated. The choice to drive drunk often has deadly consequences for the driver, their passengers, and anyone they crash into. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), each day about 28 Americans die in DUI crashes. In the 10-year period from 2010 to 2019, more than 10,000 people died every year in DUI crashes. Tragically, these were preventable deaths.
Why do people drink and drive?
Most people would never think of themselves as someone who would intentionally get behind the wheel intoxicated. Unfortunately, sometimes people have a drink or two and may not realize how intoxicated they have become. In other cases, they may know that they have had too much to drink to drive safely but they don’t want to leave their vehicle overnight or feel pressure to act like they haven’t lost control. Whatever the reasons, the risks are just not worth it.

Eldridge Ave Scene of 2 DUI Crashes in Bellingham Over the Weekend
As reported by whatcom-news.com, first responders were dispatched to the scene of two separate DUI crashes less than a mile apart on Eldridge Ave last weekend. The first crash occurred about 10:35 p.m. on Friday, April 29th, and the second about 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, April 30th. Both incidents were single vehicle accidents, involving drivers who were booked into Whatcom County Jail and charged with driving under the influence.
What is a single vehicle accident?
A single vehicle accident is when only one vehicle is involved in an accident. Often, a single-vehicle accident is a runoff-road (ROR) crash. A ROR accident is when a vehicle leaves the roadway and moves onto the shoulder, median, roadside, or parking lane, etc. and then crashes into a pedestrian or an unmoving object like a tree, pole, wall, or fire hydrant. This is exactly the type of accident that occurred twice over the weekend. In a single-car accident, property damage and personal injuries are the typical outcome.
According to the report, residents along Eldridge Avenue say they believe that the high number of accidents that occur along this roadway are often connected to speeding. Speeding is a danger to everyone on the road from the driver themselves, to other drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. The fact is that speeding increases the chance of getting into a car accident and increases the likelihood that the accident will be deadly.
