After 10 Infant Deaths, Fisher-Price Issues Warning About Rock ‘N Play
On April 5, 2019 Fisher-Price and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a warning to parents and caregivers about the Rock ‘N Play. The warning came in response to the company receiving reports of deaths involving the infant product; a total of 10 since 2015. The deaths happened when babies rolled from their backs to their stomachs or sides while unrestrained. The press release issued by CPSC noted that all 10 infants were three months of age or older.
Fisher-Price issues warning about Rock ‘n Play
CPSC had issued a warning in the past to always use the three-point restraint system in infant-reclined sleep products but are now recommending that caregivers stop using these products by three-months of age or as soon as the baby is able to rollover. Fisher-Price also warns parents to stop using the product once their infant could rollover because of a concern that the harness system is not being used consistently to hold babies on their back.
Infant sleep safety guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics
- Infants should sleep in the same room as their parents but on a separate surface like a crib or bassinet to decrease the risk of SIDS.
- Infants should be placed to sleep on their backs on a flat, firm mattress with a tightly fitted bottom sheet.
- No pillows, blankets or stuffed toys should be placed on the sleep surface.
- Do not use a bumper around the edge of the crib.
- Do not use inclined sleep products that require restraining the baby including strollers and infant car seats.
- Never fall asleep with your baby on the couch.
- Parents should avoid smoking in the house and never be under the influence of drugs or alcohol around the baby.
Products liability claims
If your child has been injured because of a product you used, you may be able to recover damages with the help of a defective products attorney. An attorney who specializes in this area can determine if you have a defective product claim to make against the manufacturer, retailer or distributor by identifying the types and amounts of damages you have suffered and the cause of the accident. In some cases, defective products affect a large number of people; bringing the possibility of joining or starting a class action lawsuit. If you believe that you suffered an injury from a defective product because of the negligence of another; contact a defective products attorney for a consultation. The attorney can identify the defendant and the value of your claim and gather evidence to show whether the plaintiff’s injuries were caused by negligence and that they caused damages.
