Veterans Day DUI Crash Leads to Minor Injuries
While we have made great strides on education around the consequences of drinking and driving, there are still far too many accidents involving alcohol. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), each day about 28 Americans die in DUI crashes. In the 10-year period from 2010 to 2019, more than 10,000 people died every year in drunk driving car accidents. In Whatcom County alone, it is not uncommon to see a headline or two a month about a DUI crash. When a driver chooses to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, they are making a choice that could endanger both themselves, their passengers, and others on the road.

DUI Crash in Ferndale leads to minor injuries
As reported by Whatcom News, a driver and passenger of a red Nissan Titan pickup truck were transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center with what were considered to be minor injuries after reportedly crashing into a tree and landing in a ditch. The single-vehicle accident took place at the T-intersection of Brown and Malloy Roads in Ferndale about 6 a.m. this morning.
Washington State troopers at the scene deduced that the truck was driving northbound on Malloy Road when it failed to stop at the signed T-intersection and struck a tree on the opposite side of the road. The driver is facing driving under the influence (DUI) charges.
Factors involved in the accident
Single-vehicle collision
A single-vehicle crash has occurred when only one vehicle is involved in an accident. Perhaps surprisingly, single-car collisions carry a higher fatality rate than head-on or side-impact collisions. More than 8,000 people die in single-vehicle rollover crashes in the United States each year. Often, a single-vehicle accident is a runoff-road (ROR) crash. A ROR accident is when a vehicle leaves the roadway and moves onto the shoulder, median, roadside or parking lane, etc. and then crashes into an unmoving object like a tree, pole, wall, or fire hydrant. This is exactly the type of accident that occurred this morning.
Drinking and driving
A drunk driving accident is when a collision occurs because of an alcohol-impaired driver. Drunk driving accidents cause thousands of personal injuries and fatalities every year. With the driver facing DUI charges, drinking and driving was likely a factor in today’s accident.
