School Bus Safety: Seat Belts in School Buses
Most people have ridden a school bus, a public transit bus and a private transportation vehicle like a charter bus. What they all have in common is that they transport a large group of people and don’t have seat belts. Considering that seat belt laws for other types of vehicles have been in place for decades with known life-saving benefits it is a bit surprising that the same never happened for buses.

As far as transportation goes, school buses are the safest mode by far. School buses have a rate of 0.2 deaths per 100 million miles traveled; the rate of deaths in automobiles is eight times higher. Put another way, between 1994 and 2004, 71 school bus passengers died in crashes compared to 31,693 people killed in crashed in cars and light trucks in 2004 alone.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to look at how we might prevent even more personal injuries by teaching our children to use school bus safety tips.

Overall, taking a school bus is a very safe mode of transportation; it is safer than other modes of transportation, according to reports by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Some 24 million students are transported more than four billion miles on school buses every year but school bus accidents and deaths are extremely rare. There are still risks, however, to students on and around school buses.
