Rollover Crash Creates Main Street, Ferndale WA Traffic Jam
A rollover crash in the 1700 block of Main Street, Ferndale caused a traffic jam late afternoon on March 30, 2018. Eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane just as more cars entered the roadway ahead of the holiday weekend and rush hour traffic. The car accident, which happened at the driveway from Main Street to businesses south of Main Street by the former Bob’s Burgers location, involved at least three motor vehicles.
According to traffic reports, the collision caused significant front-end damage to a Volkswagen Jetta station wagon and ended with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup lying on its driver’s side with one person trapped inside. A SUV also suffered minor damage as a result of the pickup rolling into it.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 crews were called to the scene. Upon arrival they treated two crash victims on site including the person extricated from the cab of the Silverado pickup. Both people requiring treatment had minor injuries and did not need to be transported to the hospital for further care.
Main Street, Ferndale WA rollover crash report
The following day, Ferndale Police Sargeant Travis Card released details of the police investigation. The report stated that a Chevrolet Silverado pickup was traveling westbound on Main Street before making a left turn into the private parking lot. At the same time, a blue Volkswagen Jetta station wagon was traveling eastbound in the right lane. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado made an error by failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making the left turn, which resulted in the Volkswagen crashing into the passenger side of the Chevrolet. The impact caused the Chevrolet to flip on its side and then crash into a third vehicle, a white Audi that was stopped and waiting to turn out of the private lot.
The driver of the Chevrolet was issued a traffic infraction for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
Rollover crash statistics
Rollover crashes are a particularly deadly type of car accident. Of the almost 9.1 million motor vehicle accidents in 2010, only 2.1 percent were identified as a rollover crash but they accounted for almost 35 percent of all deaths from passenger vehicle collisions.
The majority of rollover crash fatalities are single-vehicle accidents. Vehicle rollover accidents are classified as either tripped or un-tripped. Tripped rollovers are caused by the vehicle’s tire(s) hitting an unexpected surface like a curb, loose gravel or another vehicle which then interrupts the forward motion of the car. Un-tripped rollover crashes are those that are caused by steering input, speed, and friction with the ground.
