Man Charged with DUI in Birch Bay Rollover Crash
A rollover crash occurred on Blaine Road at Arnie Road in Birch Bay about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 4th. North Whatcom Fire & Rescue personnel and the Washington State Patrol (WSP) responded to the scene.
Birch Bay rollover crash
A press memo from the WSP revealed details of the crash. Thirty-three-year-old Aaron B. Moreau of Ferndale, WA was driving a blue 1997 Honda Civic 4-door southbound on Blaine Road while a black 2004 BMW 525 4-door was driving northbound with 21-year old Sean C. Herrig of Blaine at the wheel. When the Honda crossed the centerline, it crashed into the BMW and rolled before landing on its wheels on the shoulder of the road. The BMW landed in the northbound lane. Neither driver was injured in the crash but two of Moreau’s four juvenile passengers ranging from 7 to 13-years-old were injured along with Herrig’s lone passenger, 23-year old Jaydelyn K. Roy of Fife. The two older children and Roy were transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for care. The two children were later transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to undergo surgery.
All seven people involved in the rollover crash were wearing their safety belts at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were impounded to the WSP’s Bellingham station.
Moreau arrested and charged following crash
WSP investigators concluded that driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) was the cause of the crash. Moreau was booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of violating the terms of an ignition interlock driver’s license, hit-and-run of an attended vehicle, DUI, vehicular assault and reckless endangerment.
