As reported by cascadiadaily.com, an 83-year-old driver traveling north on I-5 south of Bellingham on June 24, 2026 failed to merge as traffic approached a construction zone. His SUV struck a concrete barrier, rolled over, and came to rest upside down on the shoulder. Both the driver and his passenger were wearing seat belts, but suffered injuries that required hospitalization. The crash also closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 for more than an hour.
