GM Set to Recall 800,000 Pickup Trucks
General Motors has recalled nearly 800,00 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks due to faulty electric power steering (EPS) systems that suddenly lose power. The recall, issued in early August, 2017 will impact about 690,000 trucks in the U.S., and another 100,000 in Canada and other countries. Officials began to investigate the issue in February, 2017. The Chevrolet Silverados with faulty steering systems were manufactured between Jan. 30, 2013 and Sept. 4, 2014, and the GMC Sierras were built between Jan. 29, 2013 and Sept. 4, 2014.
What caused the GM recall?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the power steering may fail during times when these vehicles are using high amounts of electrical power. Specifically, the power steering may be disabled without warning if the truck’s power levels drop below 8.8 volts for more than one second. The loss of power typically only lasts for one second but there is still increased risk for a car accident. Because the driver loses and then regains power steering so suddenly it can cause the driver to lose control of their vehicle.
Unfortunately for these vehicle owners, these same truck models were involved in a recall of 3.64 million cars in 2016 because of faulty airbag software.
GM will reimburse truck owners to repair their EPS system which involves a software update.
Product liability law
Defective and dangerous products cause thousands of injuries every year. If you were involved in a car crash caused by a defective part, contact a product liability lawyer today; he or she may be able to help you recover damages for your injury.
In successful product liability cases, a product manufacturer, distributor or seller is held liable for the injuries caused by the defective or dangerous product. Product liability laws vary by state but generally require that a product meet ordinary consumer expectations that a product be free of defects or dangers. When a product fails to meet this threshold, it could end up as part of a product liability lawsuit.
