City Planners Consider Safety Improvements to Downtown Ferndale Intersection
In April of 2017, city officials permanently removed electronic traffic signals at 1st Avenue and Main Street after a test period with the lights deactivated. Since the lights came down, the city has received complaints from drivers, pedestrians and local businesses about it being more difficult for drivers to make left hand turns and for pedestrians to cross the intersection safely. In a presentation at the Ferndale City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 19, Public Works Director Kevin Renz discussed 2019 infrastructure projects including one to make improvements to the intersection.
City of Ferndale Communications Officer Riley Sweeney described the project as follows “The City is planning safety enhancements at 1st and Main. Currently we are looking at removing one of the crosswalks there and providing significant safety improvements to the other. We are working with our traffic consultant, Transpo, to finalize those options (as well as the total cost) with the goal of bringing the construction contract before council in the next couple of months so it can be installed Summer 2019.”
Statistics: pedestrian accidents at intersections
According to statistics gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, there are almost 5,000 pedestrian accident deaths in the United States each year. There are an additional 78,000 injured; 46,000 of those are children. Although intersections are only a tiny portion of U.S. surface road mileage, more than one in five pedestrian deaths happens because of a crash with a vehicle at an intersection.
Pedestrians have very little to shield themselves in the event of a collision compared to a driver of a motor vehicle. If you or a loved one was the victim of a motor vehicle versus pedestrian accident you may be struggling with devastating injuries causing pain and suffering, time off of work and medical bills. In the worst cases, pedestrians are left with permanent scars or disabilities. An experienced car accident attorney can evaluate your accident, injuries and damages and discuss your legal rights.
