The other two passengers, a 16-year-old male and a 14-year-old female, were treated and released at the scene of the crash. They had both been wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.
The driver, 27-year-old Collin M. Lewis of Ferndale, was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The car, a green 2000 Nissan Maxima, was traveling southbound near milepost 12.5 on State Route 11 when it hit the guardrail at 5:38 p.m. Tuesday. High speed was identified as the cause of the crash by WSP.
Lewis was later booked into the Skagit County Jail by the Washington State Patrol on suspicion of vehicular assault, driving with a suspended/restricted license, ignition interlock violation and felony DUI. As of the morning of April 18, Lewis remained in custody at the jail.
South Whatcom Fire Authority crews were called to the scene to assist Skagit County crews in the rescue. Chief Dave Ralston set up a rope system to get responders down to the car and passengers back up from the landing site down the embankment.
